What changed in 2026

From tax year 2026, a tip has to be reported on its own.

Four facts, each linked to the page it comes from. Ins Tip is not a tax adviser.

  1. There is a federal deduction for tips.

Up to $25,000 of qualified tips can be deducted from federal taxable income for tax years 2025 to 2028. Social Security and Medicare taxes still apply. State rules differ.

Limits apply: listed occupations, income phase-out, and tips must be reported.

Over 7.5 million filers claimed it for 2025. The average was above $7,000.

  2. The rules are final, and they come with a list.

Treasury’s final rules, T.D. 10044, were published on 13 April 2026 and took effect on 12 June 2026. They list 71 occupations in 8 categories, each with a three-digit code. Housekeeping is 304.

  3. A tip has to be a choice, and in dollars.

To count, a tip must be voluntary: the guest could have given nothing. And it must be paid in dollars: cash, a card, or an app that pays in dollars. Digital assets do not count.

  4. It has to be reported, with a code.

From tax year 2026 a tip counts toward the deduction only when it is reported separately on a tax form.

If you are an employee and receive $20 or more in tips in a month, you must report them to your employer by the 10th of the next month.

Form 1099-K now has a box for cash tips (1c) and a box for occupation codes (1d).

Questions

What people ask first.

Short answers. The longer ones are on the pages for guests, venues and how it works.

Whose tag is it?
Your tag is yours. It goes where you go. It is tied to you, not to a venue. The venue is never in the flow of funds.
Can a guest give nothing?
Always. No amount is picked for them, “Not now” is always on the page, and the custom field takes any amount. A tip the guest could not reduce to zero is not a qualified tip.
Does anything come out of my tip?
No. Free to receive. The whole tip is yours. Your guest sees the service fee before they pay. It is added on top. Nothing comes out of your tip.
How fast is the money?
Cash out to your own debit card. Typically within 30 minutes, any hour of any day.
Do I still report tips to my employer?
Yes. If you are an employee and receive $20 or more in tips in a month, you must report them to your employer by the 10th of the next month. Your report is ready in the app. You hand it in.
Are tips taxed?
Up to $25,000 of qualified tips can be deducted from federal taxable income for tax years 2025 to 2028. Social Security and Medicare taxes still apply. State rules differ. Limits apply: listed occupations, income phase-out, and tips must be reported. Ins Tip is not a tax adviser.
Is there an Ins Tip card?
The Ins Tip card is planned. It is not live. This is a preview. The card will always be your choice. Your tips reach you with or without it.
What does a guest need?
A phone. There is no app for them to download. They pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or a card, on a web page.
